Below you will find information on the teachers and the baskets offered for 2008. Check back for updates on our 12th annual Retreat for 2009!
Mary Brown- Many of you know Mary from classes and guilds. She very artistic and an excellent teacher! She likes to think outside the box! Mary has been weaving for 10 years. She likes to incorporate natural materials and beads into her weaving. She has designed some unique double wall baskets.
Laura Lee Zanger- Laura Lee is from Augusta, GA. She loves twills! In her own words "I have become obsessed with twills and can't stop myself ". She has been teaching the basketry convention circuit since 2001.She is an excellent fun teacher and some of you have taken her classes through various guilds and basket conventions. Venie Hinson- Venie is from Andover OH. As a fiber artist, Venie works in a variety of media including marbling, weaving, papermaking, felt making, and, of course, basketry. She designs baskets, creating a number of new baskets annually. In the past few years she has been teaching at various regional basket conferences in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Missouri. Favorite basket techniques include twill weave variations and unique structures, such as the divided wall construction or marbled baskets. Karen
Hobbs
(Austin Texas)
Karen has been weaving since 1996 and teaching basket weaving since 2005. A wonderful aunt in Arkansas taught Karen to weave with pine needles, and it has become a passion. Her favorite is working with round reed and/or pine needles and gourds. She not only teaches 10th graders at the Austin Waldorf School, but also adults in Austin, Houston, Gutherie OK, and next year in North Carolina. She is currently the President of the Central Texas Basket Guild.
JILL ROBINSON (Austin TX)
Jill has been weaving baskets since 1987 and teaching basket weaving since 1991. She has been recognized over the years in Austin and throughout the state of Texas for her beautiful work! She attended the White Oak Basketry School in West Virginia from 1991-2001 for two weeks each year taught by nationally renowned basket artists Tom and Connie McColley (exhibited at the Smithsonian and around the U.S.).
LYN SILER (Wilmington NC)
Lyn is a Co-Founder of NCBA and the author of “The Basket Book”, “Handmade Baskets”, “The How to Make Baskets” series and “Over, Under Around and Through”. She has taught classes across the United States and Europe.
Monica Impellizzeri (Houston Texas)
I have been weaving for 23 years. I started weaving while living in northern Michigan and brought my weaving south to Oklahoma where I taught for one year at Deer Creek Gallery before settling in the Houston area. I have taught for 8 years at the International Quilt Show in Houston and also teach five to six days a week at my shop Baskets 'N the Works in Spring Tx.
