TWILL BOWL
Materials:
1/4" flat oval for spokes
11/64 flat oval smoked for weavers
#1 round reed for weavers
#2 smoked round reed for weavers
3/8" flat reed smoked for one row of weaving
1/2" flat oval smoked for rims
Medium binder cane or 3/16" flat oval for lashing
#2 seagrass for rim filler
Preparation: From the 1/4" flat oval cut 38 spokes 25" long. Mark the centers of all spokes on the rough side. Soak the spokes and the #1 round reed in warm water for a few minutes.
Base: Weave a base of 19 spokes over 19 spokes. The spokes will be very close (about 1/4" apart or less). It is easier to keep the spokes close together while you are weaving them. True the base to measure 8" by 8". Twine two rows with the #1 round reed. Wet the spokes and bend each one up towards the center marks.
Side Weaving: All rows are woven in a start and stop twill weave. This is a simple twill of over two spokes under two spokes. Overlap the ends of each row by four groups of spokes. Alternate the starting points on different sides of the basket.
Weave 26 rows of 11/64" flat oval smoked (or a height of 5"). Triple weave three rows of #2 smoked round reed. Weave one row of 3/8" smoked flat reed. Wet the spokes. Cut the inside spokes off flush with the last row of weaving. Tuck the outside spokes to the inside of the basket. Hide the ends under the round reed and three rows of weaving on the inside.
Rims: Cut two pieces of 1/2" smoked flat oval reed to cover the last row of weaving. One piece for the outside of the basket and one piece for the inside of the basket. allow a two inch overlap for each piece. Place the seagrass inbetween the two rims and lash in place with the medium binder cane.
